Got blown off the Yuba yesterday!!!

I met my two clients yesterday to fish the Yuba and what a soggy rainy morning it was. The cdec.water.ca.gov site said flows were 720cfs for Yuba at Smartsville and Deer Creek was flowing at 17cfs. Got there and it had to be flowing at at least 2000cfs and chocolate! We wouldn't have hooked a single Trout were we to have fished. (Update: they fixed their meters and it turns out Deer Creek was up to 3470cfs at 3pm!) So we loaded up the rig and headed to Oroville. The low flow of the Feather looked great. We hooked some decent fish, including this Steelhead. Thanks, Brian and Chris for being so flexible!

This rain may have things blown out for a while. There looks to be some decent rain in the forecast for the next few days. Stay tuned for updates.

Thanks,

Dave

Fly fishing the Yuba River December 10, 2011

Last weekend I had the pleasure of guiding Rusty and his girlfriend Deserae on the Yuba River. We couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day. You have to love California weather. To be fly fishing with dries in December is a pretty great thing!

Tough day on the Yuba

I fished a great couple on the Yuba River this week. We drifted from the Highway 20 Bridge to Sycamore Ranch. The water is low and clear and there were BWO's coming off sporadically. We found quartering casts down stream along the current seams and riffles worked best. You may have noticed that this post is missing something...like say...fish pictures?

Yuba River pre-Thanksgiving dry fly action.

I had the pleasure of taking Nancy S and her husband fly fishing on the Yuba River just before Thanksgiving. Most anglers have moved on to fishing the Lower Sac or fishing for Steelhead, but I was still glad we were fishing via our private access. The weather was mild and partly cloudy with temps hovering around 60 degrees. There was sporadic insect activity, but this didn't deter us from targeting fish on dries. Overall we had a good day. We hooked and positively identified 15 fish. Not only does fishing dries remove the guess work of indicator nymphing, it also is darn fun!
